 Staircases
are often a challenge in terms of design, but they offer lots of room
forcreativity. In this first example, we installed aninglenook with
built-in storage, as well as judges' paneling, a salvaged newel post,
and spindles. As a final creative touch, we inlaid maple diamonds into
the curve of the inglenook, the Craftsman spindles, and the newel. |

 This
tucked away staircase needed something simple: a short run of spindles,
handrail, and a newel. After scouring salvage yards, we came up with
the components from various sources. Oak parts, stripped of their
paint, did the trick.

 In
this clean-lined Victorian, we employed a circa 1910 painted newel
post with painted spindles. The overall feeling is delicate whimsy
as it disappears up into the 12-foot ceiling.
