This
lovely 2 bedroom/ 2 bathroom Craftsman bungalow was built in the Edgewood
neighborhood of Atlanta in 1925. It featured large open rooms, bright
ribbon light windows, and oak floors; we restored these elements and added
period-appropriate details of our own.
The house is sited on a corner lot and takes full advantage of the lot.
We landscaped the yard by adding an antique brick retaining wall, 16 cherry
trees lining the side of the property, many azaleas, perennials, a monkey
grass border along the front sidewalk, Leland cypress along the property
line, and slate flagstones leading to the backyard. We pruned a heirloom
red rose bush in the front yard and mulched it for ultimate blooms.

The autumnal stained glass in the front gable is a custom piece
we designed specifically for this home. It depicts an oak branch
bisecting the glass with leaves and acorns, and was inspired by
the old oak tree that holds court over the backyard. The glass is
backlit with a switch in the living room.
The large welcoming front porch was completely re-built. Rotted
front columns were replaced by stylish arts & crafts faux mortise
& tenon replacements. The entire porch was leveled, re-supported
and painted. The masonry piers flanking the entryway were taken
down and rebuilt completely. The original heart of pine front French
door, with original hardware, was stripped of its paint, sanded,
and refinished. A gorgeous rare cast iron original
light fixture was removed, restored with caramel slag glass,
and re-hung.

The spacious living room boasts a variety of period-perfect
architectural details. An original and beautiful yellow brick
fireplace was discovered under a thick coat of black paint.
It was topped with a heart of pine mantel
and flanked by an original (now restored) built-in heart of pine
bookcase.
The original windows
are restored, hand-stripped, re-roped, reglazed, and still boast
restored brass locks and their original metal window weights. A
stunning custom milled heart of pine crown
molding with supportive brackets was designed by LSR and implemented
by our talented carpenter. The wood was rescued from an old cotton
mill being demolished in another part of Atlanta. All of the antique
pine in this room has been shellacked to provide the warmth and
richness of time past. This gorgeous central chandelier
dates to the 1920s and has been refinished, rewired, and boasts
period style globes.

The large dining room features a maximum amount
of natural sunlight from large windows that stream sun in from the
Southern exposure. We added a simple board & batten wainscoting
treatment to this dining room to emphasize the linear form of the
arts & crafts movement. The crown molding in this room is antique
molding rescued from another house, stripped, and then re-painted.
We removed an original wall between
the dining room and kitchen to open up the space, flood the
kitchen with light, and make entertaining effortless.

The kitchen evokes the old world charm of a farmhouse while
paradoxically possessing rich texture and modern conveniences. Creamy,
antique styled custom
cabinets with chamfered feet and flush inset doors, beaded board
detailing with upper glass openings, antique-style oiled bronze
latches, and furniture styling set this kitchen apart. The cabinets
run to the ceiling to maximize storage and add to the visual impact.
Zesty red paint, dark granite countertops, a rustic diamond patterned
slate backsplash,
stainless steel appliances, and warm oak floors complete the look.
The floors in this room are reclaimed 1920s oak from a Buckhead
residence targeted for demolition, and blend seamlessly with the
original oak floors.
The kitchen also features a wonderful eat in breakfast bar and
additional custom
cabinets that house a full sized front loading washer &
dryer. A rare original Craftsman heart of pine door
opens off the kitchen to an elevated side porch with a great view
of Battlefield Avenue. Much like the front porch, this entire porch
has been reconstructed from the framing through the columns.

This was the homes original bathroom
and while the spaces footprint hasnt changed, we rebuilt
all of the framing, from the floor through the walls. We added a
late 1800s beveled window, installed high on the wall, to
admit natural light, but guard against water damage. We used a lovely
grey marble that we ran to the ceiling. We installed salvaged oak
flooring from the same Buckhead house, period molding, reproduction
plumbing fixtures, and an antique oak medicine cabinet.

The master suite is a large bedroom
with oak floors, access to the rear deck, a lovely ceiling fan,
and two ribbon light windows. A large stone tiled bathroom (left)
with double shower heads, double closets, and a 1800s leaded glass
window is accessible off the room. The bathroom tile focuses on
bringing the outside in, with grey marble base, an inlaid artic
slate, sea-foam glass tiles, and topped with a white artic slate
pattern. Large double closets, a gorgeous Kohler sink, inset medicine
cabinet, and period molding and lighting
make this a lovely room. The narrow antique window in the bathroom
was moved from the original kitchen to the bathroom in order to
mesh this addition seamlessly into the original house.
